Kevin Lee, a professional mixed martial artist, has said that Bitcoin played a big role in his choice to join a new marketing organization (BTC).

As per MMA news source BJ Penn, Lee will be paid in BTC as part of a four-fight deal with the Russia-based Eagle Fighting Championship. The boxer is said to have been a HODLer since before the 2017 bull run, with part of the earnings subsequently being used to live off of following knee surgery.

“To be paid in Bitcoin and not give me any pushback on it whatsoever, was huge in the decision [to sign with Eagle FC],” said Lee. “It gives me a lot more financial security and will help me fight better, too.”

Payments for the Eagle FC have not been published, although Lee has previously earned up to $280,000 in a UFC battle against Tony Ferguson. In a Dec. 17 interview, Lee hinted that Eagle FC would pay him more than he was paid by the Ultimate Fighting Championship, or UFC, implying a possible payment of 5.86 BTC or more at current pricing.

After testing positive for Adderall, Lee, popularly known as The Motown Phenom, was recently prohibited from competing for six months and fined. He was eventually released from his UFC contract before Eagle FC sought to sign him; his first bout with the organization is scheduled for March 11 against Diego Sanchez.

Through cooperation with cryptocurrency and blockchain companies, UFC has been looking into the advantages of digital assets. In July, the company signed a ten-year $175 million partnership with Crypto.com, which finally resulted in the issuance of UFC-licensed nonfungible tokens. Furthermore, the fighting championship recently released a fan token in collaboration with blockchain rewards app Socios and tokenization platform Chiliz.

Since Jon Fitch became the first professional fighter to be paid in Bitcoin in 2015, other MMA athletes have shown interest in BTC and other currencies. Former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez admitted to buying BTC last year, while Ben Askren was paid to advertise Litecoin (LTC).
